The “Fill with Empty” works are a series of portraits in which the face of a person, animal, or other living creature is replaced by the mouth of a vase, jar, or other ceramic object. Each piece is made of pottery clay, and is created by hand, making the inside of the clay hollow. The faces are hollowed out, and although we cannot see their expressions, we can sense the outlines of each piece's existence through its appearance and gestures.
The word “Fill with Empty” does not mean that there is nothing, but rather that it is full of blank spaces that contain a variety of possibilities. The face, the part of the face that expresses the characteristics of a person, becomes “empty,” and the ground and the image are reversed, creating an opportunity for the image to expand.
I want to capture the existence that arises between the boundaries of various things, such as “art” and “craft,” “existence” and “nothingness,” and create objects that serve as “vessels” for thoughts and feelings.
